After weeks of tensions and fears a build of over 150,000 troops, Russia has withdrawn from the region.
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu ordered troops back to their bases following weeks of tension between Ukraine and Russia.
Shoigu said their movements were part of ‘snap checks’ though the number of troops in mobilization appeared to go beyond that.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said “The reduction of troops on our border proportionally reduces tension.
Ukraine is always vigilant, yet welcomes any steps to decrease the military presence & deescalate the situation in Donbas”
NATO said the move was “important and well overdue”. It is not yet known what Russia plans next as tensions still remain over imprisoned Putin critic Alexei Navalny and illegally annexed Crimea. More to come.
