Air Raids Plague Gaza As Silwan Is Demolished

Israeli forces continue an assault on Palestinian territories despite ceasefire.

The Israeli government has continued to demolish Palestinian homes leaving 15 families displaced despite a ceasefire agreement.

Israeli airstrikes were carried out in the Gaza strip, which the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) claim was targeting a weapons manufacturing site. Hamas said it was a training ground and have reported no casualties.

The Israeli Defence Force released a statement saying: “In response to the arson balloons fired towards Israeli territory today, fighter jets struck … a weapons manufacturing site belonging to the Hamas terror organisation…”

This is the third wave of attacks carried out by the IDF since an agreed ceasefire was struck following Israel’s 11-day bombardment of Palestinian territories. This includes raids and teargas deployment on worshipers at Al Aqsa Masjid in Jerusalem, forced evictions of Arab citizens and now the demolition of entire neighbourhoods in the district of Silwan, Jerusalem. A further 1,550 have been served demolition orders which could potentially trigger more, risking mass displacement of Arab Palestinians.

Caroline Ort of the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Palestine office said: “Israeli authorities must immediately stop forcibly displacing people and demolishing their homes and property,” … “Under the Fourth Geneva Convention, Israel has an obligation to protect civilians under its occupation and to refrain from destroying private property.”
