Following weeks of fighting, Khartoum embraces ceasefire of hostilities. Though skirmishes continue.
The country which has spiralled out of control following civil war between the country’s military and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has allegedly reached a ceasefire agreement. This comes in the wake of an assassination of a West Darfur Governor and air strikes that claimed the lives of five children.
2.2 million people have been displaced as a consequence of the conflict with urban fighting continuing as well as skirmishes in the outer front lines of the war.
The RSF have apparently agreed to a new 72 hour ceasefire following mediation between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
Following negotiations, the agreement went into effect at 04:00 am GMT after an announcement was made by Washington and Riyadh.
It read: “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and United States of America announce the agreement of representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a ceasefire throughout Sudan for a period of 72 hours,”
It is alleged the agreement is to assist the movement of aid and allow for evacuations. Both sides claim to be leading the conflict with the RSF claiming to be at a particular advantage. Though it is still unclear as the conflict rages on now for more than 2 months.
