Nearly 7,000 Refugees & Migrants Arrive At Italian Island In 24 Hours | News

The tourist Isle of Lampedusa witnessed an astonishing number of people arrive within a one day period.

The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has vowed to stave off illegal immigration has had the small Island of Lampedusa, overwhelmed by an influx of more than 7,000 migrants and refugees.

6,800 people arrived in poorly constructed vessels that include a flotilla of dinghies and poorly constructed boats, launched from Tunisia’s coastline. The island is known as a fishing and tourist village.

Elsewhere, both Germany and France vowed tougher measures for people who arrive by sea, a far cry from the welcoming spirit of Angela Merkel’s programme in the advent of Syria’s devastating war.

According to the Italian Interior Ministry, more than 120,000 people have arrived via sea this year alone.

In June of this year, 79 men, women and children died at sea trying to reach the shores of Greece. It was considered to be the most deadliest shipwreck in the Mediterranean so far this year.
