Biden’s Plan to Supply ATACMS Missiles Boosts Ukraine’s Counter-Offensive | News

Biden extends support to Ukraine by providing ATACMS long-range missiles, increasing its military reach to 190 miles.

US President Joe Biden is reportedly set to provide Ukraine with advanced long-range missiles to aid its ongoing counter-offensive against Russia.

Reports from US officials indicate that Ukraine will receive ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 190 miles (300km), granting Kyiv the capability to strike deep into Russian-held territory.

Biden-Zelensky meet

During a meeting at the White House, President Biden informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the decision to supply a “small number” of ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) missiles.

This development follows a recent missile strike by Ukraine on the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea fleet in Crimea. The attack used Storm Shadow missiles supplied by Britain and France, highlighting Ukraine’s reliance on Western weaponry.

New military aid announced

Following the Biden-Zelensky talks, the US announced an additional $325 million in military aid, including artillery and ammunition, for Ukraine, with Abrams tanks set to be delivered to Kyiv soon.

Details on ATACMS configuration

The Washington Post suggests that Ukraine will receive ATACMS armed with cluster bomblets instead of a single warhead, although these reports have not been officially confirmed by either the US or Ukraine.

A strategic move surrounded by uncertainty

While both leaders have been reticent about the ATACMS issue, President Zelensky remains optimistic about reaching an agreement with President Biden.

Ukraine has long sought ATACMS missiles to enhance its counter-offensive capabilities, potentially bringing key Russian supply lines and logistical hubs within striking distance, making resupplying troops and weaponry more challenging for Moscow.

The changing US stance still carries caution due to geopolitical implications.

The Biden administration’s stance on providing modern weaponry to Ukraine appears to have evolved, with recent deliveries including high-precision Himars long-range rocket systems and Patriot air defense missiles.
