Armed wing of Hamas makes statement following release of two hostages.
The commander of the armed wing of Hamas, the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, Abu Ubaida, released a statement following talks with Qatari officials.
“In response to Qatari efforts, we released two American detainees (a mother and her daughter) for humanitarian reasons, and to prove to the American people and the world that the allegations of Biden and his fascist administration are false allegations that have no basis in truth.”
The conflict has now claimed nearly 4,000 Palestinian lives, 1,000 of which are children. 1,400 people have died in Israel.
In a statement released by The White House, President Biden said: “Today, we have secured the release of two Americans taken hostage by Hamas during the horrific terrorist assault against Israel on October 7. Our fellow citizens have endured a terrible ordeal these past 14 days, and I am overjoyed that they will soon be reunited with their family, who has been wracked with fear.”
Mediation was brokered between Qatar, British and American officials. Hamas later told Al Jazeera: “Our detainees in [Israeli] prisons, their freedom is looming large. What we have in our hands will release all our prisoners. The longer fighting continues, the higher the number of prisoners will become.”
