VERDICT:

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The London man is an insurmountable talent that the rest of the UK scene needs to match. But so far, there have been few that have come close. On his latest project of laser-charged work, he challenges and wins without realising it.

Scrulove (real name Lee Oakeley) is one of my favourite rappers, and for good reason. I liken him to the spirit of determination that Outkast presents, with a slant that resides on this side of the pond. But comparisons aren’t really helpful when deciding how to rate an artist. He is a rising talent in the rap scene, and has created a masterful experience with his latest album, “All Those Things You’ve Been Running From, Run Towards.” Crafted in just a few months, this project stands as a testament to Scrulove’s dedication to authentic music-making, where he avoids trends and superficial marketing gimmicks.

The album is a brilliant showcase of Scrulove’s ability to blend original, relaxed beats alongside head-spinning rhyme schemes. Each track flows seamlessly, demonstrating his skill in crafting notes that feel natural and effortless. This is particularly evident in standout tracks like “Happy Madison.” Here, Scrulove’s laid-back style perfectly complements the smooth vocals of an anonymous singer, creating a relaxed vibe that’s hard to come by in the game.

What sets his latest project apart is its production, entirely helmed by Scrulove himself. There’s a raw, authentic feel to the beats, which resonates with his written style. The production quality is not just high – it’s deeply personal, reflecting the artist’s hands-on approach and his commitment to maintaining the integrity of a creative vision he is known for.

Strangers Again,” where Oakeley summons the spirit of nostalgia and a well-paced and rehearsed performance, among other tracks on the album are masterclasses in understated, yet powerful musical storytelling. They eschew mundane elements present in today’s industry, for something more substantial: a genuine reflection of the artist’s emotions. The album is a refreshing departure from the norm, offering listeners an escape into a world where authenticity is at the forefront. The outro “Don’t Tell Me How It Ends I’m Taping It” is the perfect send-off from a quality listen of consistent artisan work.

In summary, “All Those Things You’ve Been Running From, Run Towards” is a clear win for Scrulove. It’s an album that doesn’t just entertain but also connects with the listener on a deeper level, thanks to its real production and incredibly rhyme-charged lyricism. This album is not just a collection of songs; it’s a bold statement of artistic integrity in an industry often dominated by commercialism.
