First Look: “Alien Romulus” Appears Promising, Despite CGI Risk

Seven years on from the last movie, another director gives the Alien franchise a go. But don’t hold your breath.

The reboot of Ridley Scott’s Alien has everyone excited at the prospect of a classic on the cards, though with only a teaser to hand, there is little to go on. No doubt commentators will use all their magnifying techniques to analyse something with little to biopsy, and it could be said that forthcoming movie “Alien Romulus” is a hit without critique.

Mining for movie trailer clues

But there are a few clues for what we can expect. Some of the whimpers we hear within the trailer feel artificial, and the ‘face huggers’ look to be digitally created. If that is the case, it will be a betrayal of the first two movies, despite director Ridley Scott’s overuse of CGI in subsequent instalments. But thumbs up to the production crew for what appears to be an original set design.

Given the history of this franchise and a lack of producing attention to detail in recreating the lore and its bold horror atmosphere, this outing is set to perpetuate chaos witnessed in past sequels. Be hopeful, but temper your expectations.
