Projecting a delivery that is polished and slick, Beabadoobee proposes a new form of vocal entanglement between her and her listeners, one that is geared towards attracting new audiences. And by “slick and polished”, we don’t mean ‘better’, but rather, deliberate.
Her enchanting performance of nostalgia primed with a indie-auditory aesthetic is largely removed from this record. Having worked on it with production legend Rick Rubin, there is evidence to suggest he has motivated something within her, despite not knowing what it is he actually does. But who cares when the result is music that sounds this good.
