Middle East Crisis: Ground Invasion of Lebanon Commences

Israel’s military and air force is now active in Gaza, Yemen, Lebanon and Syria.

Despite global objections to a rumoured ground offensive, Israel has pressed on with its plans to enter Lebanon. Its air force continues to strike throughout the country. They say it is a “targeted and demarcated” invasion.

The exact number of troops crossing into the country is not known, though 30,000 have been stationed at a staging ground near the border.

Border clashes With Hezbollah

Earlier in the week, Israel launched airstrikes on Beirut, killing most of Hezbollah’s leadership, including Hassan Nasrallah and Ali Karaki.

More than 7,491 exchanges of gunfire have been documented between 2023 – 2024. Hezbollah intensified attacks in response to Israel’s invasion of Gaza, which has killed more than 40,000 people.

More than 700 Lebanese civilians have been killed in Israel’s assault, which they say is in retaliation to rockets fired from the south at Israeli villages.

The Tel Aviv government initially sent in commandos to clear the way for an entry point. This time, they have committed 10,000 soldiers, a sharp decrease from their efforts in Gaza.

Troop Shortage

The military has reported sharp losses against Hamas, and are now facing recruitment issues. To counter these problems, the Knesset is rumoured to be introducing measures that include recruiting African migrants in return for permanent residency.

This is their first incursion into Lebanon since 2006. Israel occupied 10% of Lebanon in the south from 1982-2000 and were later forced out by groups including Hezbollah, who formed as a response.
