Somebody’s Child Paints an Authentic Picture on ‘Time of My Life’

The debut single taken from their sophomore album, When Youth Fades Away, perfectly illustrates themes of a coming-of-age journey.

From the moment I heard this song, the first thing that came to mind was “soundtrack material.”

Time Of My Life (Official Music Video).

As an uninitiated listener of the Dublin based band, Somebody’s Child, being caught unawares by their new single Time Of My Life’s compelling score lifted my spirits.

What’s It Sound Like?

It projects an enigmatic sense of vulnerability, where the listener feels caught in between the recesses of a conduit of the unknown. The band, led by their singer Cian, says, “It’s about the flashing of life before your eyes, ending in a feeling of resolve, leaving legacy through songs and accepting fate,” explains the singer. “It was one of the most cathartic songs we’ve ever written.”

The album’s announcement was made on Instagram.

Time Of My Life is billed as a track chronicling themes of personal growth and coming to terms with a transition to adulthood.

It is indeed a coming-of-age sound, sonically propelling the listener into the confines of isolation to figure things out for themselves. It has a monochromatic feeling with a sense of having to piece things together, and this is what it feels like to be catapulted into spaces of life that feel foreign.

A Movie Inspired Music Video

The vocalist goes beyond his musical boundaries, contributing his vision for the visual elements of the tune.

Director Adrian Lee of Apollo Films collaborated with Cian to direct the music video, and this effort pays off in the form of a dramatic presentation.

Rolling in tandem with the picture, it sends a very clear and powerful message to accompany the music. The frontman explains it is inspired by a crossover between the movie Trainspotting and Skins. “I’ve always been a massive fan of film, perhaps more so than music…” he says,”…in the literal meaning of the word [fan], and it’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a while now.”

Verdict

Breathtakingly unfamiliar, there’s a character embedded within this piece, as if simmering to the chords of a flat, yet open narrative we all can understand.

It’s strangely soothing, imbued with elements of a gritty soundscape that conjure emotions of going somewhere but not really understanding where that is. Perfect.
