Remember we reviewed Kofi Flexx? He’s back, performing under his secret identity, Shabaka Hutchings. Shhh, don’t tell anyone.

Once again the prolifically gifted musician partners with rapper Billy Woods for the release of new single Timepieces, taken from his forthcoming EP Possession.

It follows his critically acclaimed album Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace, building on its poetic themes.

It is a solid offering from the gifted musician once again, and his return to collaborating with Woods is a sublime hallucinatory contribution to the scene.

Shabaka explains that his original plan for his previous album “…was to present the acoustic music as recorded in the Van Gelder and London studios, but also dissect and sample the material to produce an accompanying beats segment to the album. Timepieces is one of the results of this intention.”

The notes the artist refers to are lucidly present when comparing them to Timepieces, provides his work with a continuity rarely executed by musicians. It feels like a living, breathing ecosystem. 

Verdict

As a trimming from his last project, it’s worth noting the praise from multiple publications describing it as essential listening. This provides the substance to anticipate his upcoming project. Given past duets cultivated by Hutchings, he is already pre-approved, giving us every reason to keep an ear out for it.
