Panic In Kyiv As Ukraine Scrambles To Control Narrative

The capital remains on edge as fear of chaos spreads amidst Russia’s alleged informational war.

The United States, Italy, and Greece have closed their embassies following intelligence pointing to a “potential significant air attack on 20 November.”

Ukraine meets North Korean troops on the battlefield.

However, Ukraine believes this to be a “psychological” operation by Russia. The country’s security services stated on the social media platform Telegram that a “massive informational and psychological attack against Ukraine” is taking place.

They followed this by saying: “We urge you to trust information only from official resources,” before adding that Russia is carrying out “measures of intimidation and psychological pressure on society.”

Why Are Embassies Closing?

These events follow a series of long-range ATACMS missiles fired by the Ukrainian Armed Forces deep into the heart of Russia, after President Joe Biden approved their use. Its deployment is a significant escalation in tensions between Russia and the West.

Following Donald Trump’s election victory, the Kremlin is likely emboldened by the president-elect’s comments on the war. Recently, Putin expressed his willingness to begin talks for a cessation of hostilities, though many remain sceptical following his reneging on the Minsk accords.

ATACMS missiles launched into Russia

The US had previously denied the use of its weapons on Kremlin targets, despite their use of long range ballistic missiles throughout Kyiv controlled areas. Its apprehension was largely rooted in the fear of an intensification of the conflict, though unease will continue to grow as Russia’s armed forces have begun to reach out to its allies.

The move to allow use of its weapons deep inside their neighbour’s territory followed President Vladimir Putin’s recruitment and subsequent deployment of North Korean troops to region of Kursk.

New Alliances

Both nations have grown closer in recent months due to the war, and this new arrangement has also facilitated the sharing of technology between the two countries.

Biden’s approach to the conflict has been staunch, though some critics have said it is pointless. Despite billions given in military aid to Ukraine, weapons use has been restricted, limiting operational effectiveness.

In a statement, the US leader said, “We will not waver. Our commitment to Ukraine will not weaken. We will stand for liberty and freedom today, tomorrow, and for as long as it takes.”

Russia was less than pleased with its use. Putin stated, “This would signify the direct involvement of the United States and its allies in hostilities against Russia,” while Ukraine’s Zelensky responded, “Such things are not announced; missiles speak for themselves.”

In response, Putin confirmed the use of a new missile, the Oreshnik, capable of reaching speeds of Mach-10 (7,610 mph/12,300 km/3.40 km/s). Its only deployment successfully hit a military complex in the city of Dnipro.
