Hype for the singer’s album was real, but the music queen’s new LP is mediocre.
It’s fair to say a lot of people have been eagerly awaiting Rosé’s album ever since the singer teased it on her social channels.
Most of her fans have transitioned from following the K-Pop supergroup Black Pink, and this shows in the numbers.
What Does It Sound Like?
With hits like number one girl and APT featuring Bruno Mars, there was undeniable hype surrounding it.
When the latter dropped, the furore was immense. Rosé’s fans went bezerk over the record, and even non-pop music lovers were getting in on the party. As of today, the official music video has surpassed 515 million views.
To keep the momentum going, the singer released another song a week later, number one girl. It explores the difficulties she experienced reading online comments about herself, but also, delves into her insecurities within the music industry.
If you thought this would be a record of difference, think again. Once those two tracks have served their purpose, the album returns to the music industry’s favourite topic: love.
Silly me to believe we would be getting something different here, but it’s okay. Other songs such as 3am, deviate from the aforementioned and bring us back to a realm of poppy anthems, albeit sonically generic. Just when you think that’s it, another ballad cut from the same cloth, two years, is listed back to back.
Toxic til the end? Okay, this one is slightly different. It retrospectively analyses the heartbreak and psychological games of an ex. This is executed through an infectiously catchy chorus that the singer is well known for.
Verdict
The entire project feels stuck in a loop of a clinically sanitised sound, so much so, that it unmistakably falls within the pop-genre.
That aside, I doubt we’ll return to this record as aside from APT, there isn’t really anything worth remembering. Unless you wish to find something mindless to listen to, it’s really just background music at best.
