We react to the versatile rapper as she showcases her raw talent on NPR’s premier music slot
Last updated: 5th August 2025
Exploding onto the scene following her viral 2021 TikTok track Yucky Blucky Fruitcake, Miami rapper Doechii (real name Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon) has gone from strength to strength in a very short space of time.
Yesterday (Friday December 6th) she showed up and then some to NPR’s Tiny Desk concert, bringing more than some fire bars. Setting the tone for what is to come, she unleashed her brand of high-calibre rhymes, proving why she is one to watch.
The Performance
Mixing narratives, storytelling, and abrasive rhyme schemes, the lyricist waxed lyrical to an ensemble of instrumentalists. She was accompanied by a large crew including her hype man DJ Miss Milan as well as guitarist Tyler Victoria, Zuria Appleby.
Performing an array of music from her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, she kicked off with Boom Bap, followed by Denial Is A River, Boiled Peanuts, and Hide N Seek. It was a fast and punchy display of R&B and hip-hop, before transitioning to hard rock for the song Catfish.
The rapper also performed the song Black Girl Memoir, taken from her debut 2020 release Oh The Places You’ll Go. Hickman recounted how she wrote it specifically “for Black women,” before conveying the sentiment behind its composition. As a dark-skinned woman, there’s a very unique experience I’m trying to internalize… This is dedicated to all the beautiful Black women in the room.”
Music Career
The 26-year-old’s career in hip-hop has brought her major success in a relatively short time. Her highly skilled brand of wordplay is accentuated by her delivery. The musician’s cadence over production is equally a part of her success, and all this without having released an album.
Top Dawg Entertainment signed Doechii in 2022 where she found acclaim for her singles Persuasive and What It Is (Block Boy). She joins a host of talent in Jay Rock, Isaiah Rashad, and SZA.
A year later, these triumphs earned her award winning status, as she received the Billboard Rising Star Award and Grammy nominations for Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, and Best Rap Performance.
You can buy the vinyl of her latest release through the Capitol Records store. Signed copies are also available.
