Roc Marciano X Alchemist Rim Roll New Album ‘The Skeleton Key’

The rapper-producer duo release a new and highly anticipated album, featuring a virtually drumless hip-hop production.

Followers of Roc Marciano (real name Rahkeim Calief Meyer) and The Alchemist (Alan Daniel Maman) have been waiting some time for this release. Following the success of The Elephant Man’s Bones, the two became fan favourites. Now, we have its sequel, The Skeleton Key.

Today, of all days, it releases alongside high-profile music, making it an extra lively one for lovers of the genre. Marci is a golden benchmark in the game, with a flow that is easy to follow and full of intricate wordplay. His experimentation with over beats cooked up by his producer partner after laid back, with a distinct tonality. Don’t be mistaken, he can keep up with some of the best rhymers as heard alongside Melanin 9 on White Russian.

What It Sounds Like

There is a noticeable absence of percussion on this album, with the producer shifting focus to provide Meyer a platform for the trademark drumless style he is known for.

On Knock Off, the placement of lyrics like “exploded on the scene like soda mixed with codeine,” at the track’s outset showcases how the craft is more than just writing. The pageantry of subediting one’s work can also impact its delivery, a detail Marci understands well.

The lead single, Chopstick, though emblematic of the duo’s signature sound, on reflection, is uninspired compared to other songs on the album. But Marciano’s lyrics make up for a rare lacklustre outing for the renowned hip-hop producer.

Verdict

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Though technically a decent effort, it falls short on several fronts. Roc’s acclaim, lyrical strength, and penmanship redeem the record, but The Alchemist isn’t at his best here. The subgenre of drumless hip-hop can sometimes work, but here it misses the mark and ultimately reaches a profligate conclusion.

Roc Marciano and The Alchemist perform on stage.

Though imbued with atmospheric intent, it becomes stale in places. Highlighting the necessity of probing for creative variation, the The Skeleton Key looks in the wrong places. It had potential, but this style that may not appeal to all, including fans of the duo. We appreciate the artistry, but ultimately, it falls victim to a tawdry effort built by a failure to go further.

Where to Stream and Buy Vinyl Copies

Unfortunately, a vinyl version is unavailable, but thanks to its popularity, a release could still happen. Other albums from the artist’s catalogue can be purchased in the format including Mt. Marci and Behold a Dark Horse.

There is another, lengthier version of the album, though to access it, you’ll need to set aside a whopping £33.99 from the rapper’s online store. The standard version is available on all major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple, Tidal and Amazon.
