G-Funk is back, and in quick succession. The two LA rappers release new music weekly, this time alongside Cocoa Sarai.
The Westcoast invasion continues for Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre on new single Fire. The song evokes trademark gangster rap lyrics alongside his long term partner in rhyme, Dr. Dre.
Collaborating with multi-talented and Grammy Award-winning Cocoa Sarai, the three embark on a cruise for power in a new video offering a lens into the world of the globally recognised rappers.
Sound Profile: Themes and Genres
As you have no doubt heard, Snoop’s new album Missionary, produced by Dre, doesn’t tackle any specific themes and aims to target a multitude of audiences. This time around, they enter a bassy, string-led production inspired by Carribean music.
The two pioneers of Westcoast G-Funk express their fortitude and dynamism when it comes to danger, specifically handling firearms and eliminating competition, highlighted in lines like “happiness is a f*****’ warm gun,” as they characterise their life as one surrounded by encroaching risks. Lyrically, they describe their penchcant for lacking empathy several times: “more money, more violence, witnesses silent,” which, they wouldn’t really do, would they?
The video also includes nods to the hit movie Lethal Weapon, as the duo set sail on a boat reminiscent of Riggs and Murtaugh’s vessel.
Verdict
No matter which way you look at it, they sure do make fun music. Dre seems to have embraced a new touch in a realm where he is continuously competing alongside artists that understand their place.
Nevertheless, what does he care? He’s making music he likes and that’s all there is to it. However, based on the short movie they released, one could assume the album, thanks to music video Easter eggs), thematically leans towards that of a movie. Essentially this album is for them, and strictly one of entertainment.
Where to Stream and Buy
