Indie-pop singer’s video is a catchy uptempo song of anxiety.
There’s a punchy influence exuding from the screen, as the erratic sound of I’ve Got This All Under Control bellows.
Willow Kayne is the artist responsible for this exciting piece of music and one that could easily be placed within the score of a motion picture.
What It Sounds Like
The song reflects the anxieties of youth from Kanye’s internal monologue. Piercing like swaddled bullets, a jittering replication of heartbeat like loops emanates from the speakers. Its infectious snares purposefully lure the listener into experiencing the consternations of the songwriter.
Stylistically, this is rather different to her other songs, with her label releasing a statement saying, “The track marks a departure from Kayne’s recent mid-tempo offerings, showcasing a more dynamic side to her postmodern pop sound.“
Production was handled by Easyfun, who is responsible for music by Charli xcx. The two meld well over a soundtrack convenient to their styles, sonically rich with reminders of a renewed Born Slippy. Similarly, the music video serves as a visual reminiscent of Danny Boyle’s compositions from Trainspotting. However, it is sui generis and Willow makes it her own work of art.
Verdict
Its complex production and matter-of-fact lyrics compound an underlying message. Through an energetically momentum-building rhythm that recasts itself through varying tempos, it simmers intrigue and demonstrates an eye-opening window into the experiences of the mind. A truly superb work of music, the singer has disrupted a saturated flow of ubiquity, with a canvas of music the culture truly needs right now.
