The hip-hop duo announced they are to release part three of their highly anticipated album series.
Method Man and Redman are two of hip-hop’s most iconic duos, with a discography spanning decades through an explosive symbiotic style. It can also be argued their partnership rivals even that of Meth’s Wu-Tang membership.
Sonically, their music is distinctive within the rap game, featuring catchy and comical lyrics that complement their punchy boom-bap style. With a proven track record from the start, Meth and Red share a solid vision. Not long ago, the two rappers teased the release of Blackout! 3, the third instalment of their collaborative series.
Albums and Background
It was no surprise that the legendary duo would work on music together. Their chemistry is what sets them apart from their contemporaries, rivalling other outfits for their unique execution. They first met at the release party for Kriss Kross, later embarking on a tour together called ‘Month of the Man.’
This marked the beginning of their artistic bond where they discovered a strong musical rapport. Both featured on 2Pac‘s Got My Mind Made Up, eventually going on to record their first joint song, How High.
Their debut album Blackout! landed at number 3 on the Billboard 200, selling 254,000 units in its first week alone, eventually going platinum, famous for its singles Da Rockwilder and Tear It Off. A decade later, a follow up was released titled, Blackout! 2 and featured A Yo, and City Lights with Bun B. The album received a warm reception, peaking at number 7 in the charts.
What We Know So Far
When they performed on the concert/competition show Verzuz, they refused to compete against each other. Instead, they opted to perform together. It’s not the first time the two have disrupted proceedings, having famously shaken up the MOBO Awards in London as well as Redman’s now-iconic MTV Cribs episode.
The duo then announced that Blackout! 3 is in the works to the delight of fans everywhere. This set off a rumour mill with many speculating when it could drop.
In an interview with Red Bull’s Spiral, Redman expressed enthusiasm for the project, “I want to do a Blackout! 3, maybe like 12 songs.” However, Meth suggested he has other plans, playfully laughing at Noble’s optimism, saying, “We are not even focused on no Blackouts! or any of that shit right now. Brother, we are focused on this TV and movie stuff and producing as well. We’ve got to get these stories out there.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean music isn’t on the way; rappers now record virtually anywhere, and recordings can be tidied up later in post. For all we know, an album’s worth of material is ready to go, and given the Funk Doctor Spot‘s extraordinary 32-track long play, it could be just around the corner.
Recent Music
Fingerprints of a suspected album can be heard on Redman’s most recent album, Muddy Waters Too, where the pair jump on a Vinyl Frontiers beat for Lalala, letting loose absolute fire. The track is reminiscent of their How High Soundtrack, and is indicative of their trademark style. This aside, only one other track has dropped titled, Ruthless, featuring Jadakiss, Lloyd Banks, and Dave East.
Release Date
The pair are scheduled to perform at Krush Groove 2025, and The Roots Picnic in Los Angeles in June. Considering the proximity of the dates, it’s possible they could preview new music.
Last year, Meth featured on several tracks, with Reggie, equally dropping a fiery range of freestyles, singles, and videos. Their output suggests a momentum that could be leading somewhere. Tical even pulled out a phone full of rhymes to freestyle with Black Thought on Hot 97, suggesting he is busy despite recent comments.
Off the back of their impressive 2024 run, there is no doubting the two are in form. Regardless of a timeframe, appetite from fans is ever ready, and their close friendship supports continued collaboration.
