‘Balloonerism’: Enormous Mac Miller Album to be Released

Everything you need to know about the new posthumous hip-hop project.

The estate of Mac Miller (Malcolm James McCormick) have shared news that his posthumous album Balloonerism will drop this month.

It follows the release of his highly acclaimed projects Circles and Swimming. Here’s everything you need to know.

What You Need to Know

The project will include the previously leaked tracks 5 Dollar Pony Rides (which is now officially available to stream) and DJ’s Chord Organ featuring SZA.

A statement by the Miller estate cited “unofficial versions” of the album circulating online as one of many motivations to release it now.

Much of the work set to be released is part of sessions from the time of other projects; his family said they “…believe the project showcases both the breadth of his musical talents and fearlessness as an artist.”

It will feature fourteen songs that were captured during the time of sessions for his mixtape Faces. That places recording between the years of 2013 and 2014 in what his family call an “important” project for the rapper.

What’s the Album About?

The tracklist was solely curated by McCormick, and listeners will be able to hear ideas from Easy Mac that perhaps weren’t deemed commercially viable.

In a statement released on social media, the rapper’s estate said: “It is a project that was of great importance to Malcolm – to the extent that he commissioned artwork for it and discussions concerning when it should be released were had regularly, though ultimately GO:OD Am and subsequent albums ended up taking precedence.”

The Cover Art

Miller commissioned artist Alim Smith to reflect his artistic aspirations and perhaps malleability.

It features Mac as a balloon in a whimsically led portrayal of the lyricist; a surrealist style portrait, the balloon can be seen escaping his silhouette, reminiscent of lyrics from his song Smile
