West Coast rapper drops upbeat track with regional flair, but delivery lacks substance.
In the midst of a West Coast renewal, the game is seeing a resurgence of melodies indicative of the region’s flair. JasonMartin (formerly ‘Problem’) drops new single, Chill Out, in a case for unwinding.
Released through Republic Records, his last album Chupacabra with DJ Quik was a well received project, though his latest effort is radically foreign from his famed style.
What Does it Sound Like?
The production is handled by renowned duo Mike & Keys and features a smooth beat layered with slick-synths and vibrational baselines. Its key takeaway is a trademark motif that embodies the spirit of a regional set piece.
It begins with a slow-and-steady introductory prelude, woven with expectations that something big is going to happen. The track’s layers are introduced via a lethargic foundation until, ten seconds in, the beat picks up with hi-hats and snares, tempering concerns that the song will drag.
Martin then lets loose a flow of fluid mass, though his delivery is aloof, underscored by what some would consider the epitome of mumble rap. Often disengaged, the lyricist’s cadence is tonally akin to a motivational ‘looking in the mirror’ style speech.
Verdict
While not for everyone, I can appreciate there will be a fan-base for Chill Out, evident in YouTube comments like,as “I think we’re in a Cali renaissance.” Though the song’s subject matter reflects that of a conversational tempo, the final product feels wasted on an artist whose vocals often result in an obscured delivery.
While the music is well-structured, it is ultimately served to the wrong artist and is profligate in efforts that would be better suited to a rapper with a charismatic flow. Overall, it’s a fun tune, but it won’t be remembered as a classic.
Where to Stream
It is not currently available to stream on major platforms, but it is available (see above) on YouTube.
