Heartfelt new hip-hop song tells a story of sorrowful events against a tearjerking music production.

Now this is what I’m talking about! Extra exclamation mark required! The drill and hip-hop scene has a style problem, pressured by standards of conformity within a microclimate of subgenre expectations.

Chinx (OS), real name Derek Pinto, a UK rapper with mask in tow, stylistically delivers a momentous Friday release, Silence.

It is chock-full of specialised flows, artfully delivered alongside poignant lyrics that evoke sentiments of tragedy, paralleled with the artist’s finesse for storytelling.

What It Sounds Like

Silence‘s tuneful production is crafted by Nathaniel London, utilising snapping snares aligned with emotionally driven string samples layered upon a canvas of haunting vocalisations. The track touches on the narratives of street culture and the violence that can ensue within it, contrary to the the British education system, highlighted by lyrics such as, “I was way too clever in science, how did the streets get me inspired.”

But it is the mutually expressionistic tonality that both the producer and rapper share, like a symbiosis of artistic dexterity. This uniform performance is definitely one of the best executions I have heard thus far in 2025, and stumbling upon artists like Pinto, it stumps me as to why their reach is not greater.

Verdict

It’s a sensational presentation; Chinx’s masterful flow shames a lot of lyricists, as he not only demonstrates his proficiency in musical creativity, but an adroitness for storytelling.

In the sphere of British rap, there is an over-saturation of what I would sonically describe as conveyor belt-like styles that either go all in for the commercial element, or remain exclusively underground. Pinto has embraced both, cracking a seminal formula.
