Anticipation has been building for some time; revisions of artwork, release dates, concert dates, and more, have all contributed to the hype, having been under the microscope for a while. The unfortunate LA wildfires later delayed its drop, with Tesfaye donating $1 million to those devastated by the disaster.

What Hurry Up Tomorrow Sounds Like

As a film lover, the tracklist presents an air of sci-fi influences, and the singer’s haunting vocals present a LDN immersive soundscape for the listener.

The album is quintessentially what you’d expect from the singer-songwriter; electronic dance music coupled with shrillish vocals, bordering falsetto performances permeate the listening experience. The artist has been careful, playing it safe for pre-existing fans, whilst attempting to remain commercially accessible. It will surely please fans of the artist who want more of the same.

As the singer progresses, notes of what one would consider traditional R&B are often absent. Plastered with his signature sound, there is a refusal to be pigeonholed by benign categorisations, as he relentlessly chooses thoughtful deliveries aligned with atmospheres of wistful themes.

Verdict

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Hurry Up Tomorrow is unique in that Tesafaye effortlessly retains the identity he is known for. While it doesn’t go out of its way to reinvent the wheel, fans of the singer will be perfectly happy with this one, and casual listeners will tolerate it on the radio. It could go further, but he’s definitely playing this one cool. Overall, it’s a decent effort from The Weeknd.
