Hip-hop never sounded so good. The two rappers unleash explosive lyrical bars of golden-era sound.
It goes without saying that Redman and Method Man have maintained consistency for more than three decades. Having released two incredible albums together (three if you include the How High soundtrack), rumours of their third official collaboration continue to circulate.
For now, we’ll have to make do with something of equal fire. Lalala is the fourth single taken from Funk Doctor Spock’s current album, Muddy Waters Too.
What Lalala Sounds Like
It’s quite simply what we’ve come to expect from the lyrical tag-team, complete with explosive similes and metaphors, it’s a quintessential Reggie/Blaze joint. “America’s most blunted, Cheech and Chong say I’m don dada,” comes to mind and resonates as a fan of the duo.
With production from Vinyl Frontiers, it features a sample from Betty Chung’s “Bang Bang” over a low-strung beat that enhances both rappers’ delivery. He’s certainly done his homework, leaving me to wonder what else he’s got?
It’s a true hip-hop golden years vibe, one the culture appreciates. However, it’s unfortunate for the most part; Noble’s video choices don’t fall in line with what we’ve come to expect; in particular, this new single could have benefited from their trademark visual style.
Verdict
Overall, Lalala just rips your heart out and places it in your ears. With what many have called ‘album of the year’ under his belt, this new song is a drop of why it’s so good. The politics of the music industry should not overlook such great projects, but here we are.
