Fresh R&B with a soulful twist: hype is building around an emerging artist whose lyrics are filled with sentiments we can all relate to.
There is great but then there is even greater. Hailing from a coastal region in Cornwall, singer MazeyJune is quietly making noise. With her feet firmly on the ground, her capabilities as a songwriter are growing from her roots in the small port town of Hayle. This time, she opens up as her new single, Turn, is released.
What differences do you see in yourself as an artist compared to when you first began in music?
MJ: “I now have an unwavering belief in my ability, and an innate worthiness to take up space in this world in the short time I’m here.”
What motivates you to write?
MJ: “It’s more of a compulsion than a motivation, like something I have to do in order to stay alive, the same as breathing. If I go too long without freestyling or writing, I start to feel myself turning see-through, as soon as I touch the mic again, everything makes sense and my colour returns.”
Our Take: What ‘Turn’ Sounds Like: Featuring a supernatural vibe, June’s vocals complement an impressive production by GG Peney. Renowned as a hip-hop beat maker, this time, this time, his tradecraft goes beyond the genre, into the adjacent sound of R&B.
It embraces a slow-tempo, reminiscent of vocalist Sade. As a result, the track is sonically reminiscent of a 1980s feel, one that is fitting of June’s writing style. There is a twist: the entire song just so happens to be freestyled. You wouldn’t guess it, given the cadence of each verse; there’s a meditative effect, one that evokes nostalgia.

Your new single ‘Turn’ is out at the end of this month, what’s it about and what inspired it?
MJ: “For me, ‘Turn’ is about faith, about giving thanks to the creator, inspired by love lost and found, a deep knowing, peace washing over you, and the changes in life that keep us evolving always.”
What do you hope listeners will takeaway from the song?
MJ: “Honestly I just hope people enjoy it and it brings them a moment of calm. I don’t feel the need to make anyone take anything they wouldn’t naturally from a piece of work, as that’s one of the things that makes art special, we all hear/see/feel something different. 🙂
I love hearing how something I’ve created made someone feel though, that there, will make me well up. It’s beautiful to experience one of your own pieces of work through someone else’s eyes, it’s like the work is born anew and you get to experience it with detachment. I’m so thankful for those who hit me up telling me things like that. <3″
Details: Gallant and introspective, it’s a song that decodes the inner-affirmations of June’s ambitions. Its spiritual leaning is not a hurdle for listeners, in fact, it’s insightfully nuanced as a window into her artistry, and wonderfully composed.
We compiled all your work into a playlist to experience it as a project. This makes me wonder, is an album in the works?
MJ: “An album will pop it’s head out some day, I’m sure, it’s something that excites me yet I am in no rush to put something out for the sake of it. When the time is right, there it shall be.”

Is there a favourite venue you’ve performed at and can fans expect upcoming shows?
MJ: “No favourite venue as of yet, but shows are definitely something to expect in the future! I’m shy sometimes, hahaha.”
Aside from music, what else inspires you?
MJ: “The details. The subtle change in seasons or pace of breath. The way it feels to be in love.”
What song did you recently discover that just blew you away?
“A track/video that blew me away when I was shown it a while back by my brother Frankie would have to be, ‘Kelsey Lu – Shades of Blue’, everyone should get to enter the realm she created at least once in their lives.”
