Fresh music from the UK singer-songwriter gifts us a phenomenal track with raw intensity.
In the run-up to her forthcoming debut EP, London-based singer-songwriter Indiya releases an incredible new single, That Girl, a self-testimony on the impact of self-loathing.
The song is independently released and is a testament to her talent as a vocalist in setting a free-spirited style, excitedly announcing on social media, “My first single release, ‘That girl.’”
What That Girl Sounds Like
The track begins with a slow tempo and gently progresses into a faster rhythm that the singer matches in cadence. Her well-crafted music thematically speaks to the artist’s impassioned plea to be seen beyond just herself.
Explaining the single, the artist says: “If you asked me surface level I’d say it’s a song about not truly loving what you see in the mirror. If you asked me on a deeper note I’d say I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to exactly sum up the passionate self-loathing and loving I hold towards my warped, and forever changing, perception of myself, so l wrote a bittersweet song about a bittersweet girl who’ll never quite be able to accept herself.”
Incorporating instrumental components, such as piano and heavy bass pumps, the music formulates its own tune as it strums its way along, as if sentient. Bellowing out a spiritually encased message, the track ends on a sombre note, as the collapsing of strings are let go, as if to say: I’ve had enough.
Verdict
It is a marvellous work of indie-pop, replete with a delivery of stunning lyrical melodies produced by the musician herself. Featuring a sample of enchanting elements, it gifts the listener with a raw and perpetual notion of empathy, something relatively lost in a world of contemporary sound. With most artists polishing their sound for radio, many have forgotten how to craft motifs beyond label whims—this is something Indiya absolutely nails.
