Hollywood gets panned by viewers: What video game fans said about the block world live-action film.
Fans of the video game franchise have strong words for Hollywood. Many took to their local cinema to see what the hype was about, leaving fans of the game polarised. A Minecraft Movie: you either love it or you hate it. After a weekend of controversy involving audience members throwing popcorn at each other and causing a riot, the police were called in, and cinema chains resolved to issue warnings to visitors. For example, when a reference to “chicken jockey” was dropped, the crowds went wild, applauding every time Jack Black namedropped an item familiar to them.
Never mind what the critics are saying, there’s definitely been lazy attention to detail and a self-serving motivation among the film industry’s elite. Instead, pay attention to the fans, though critics have mostly gotten it spot on. Based on trailers, many voiced concerns about what may be. But, what people were saying about it, actually became a reality.
What Are People Saying About ‘A Minecraft Movie’?
Overall, there was a pretty low bar going into it and some found value, while others felt betrayed. Our preview of the teaser seemed pretty spot on as to why there were reservations, and the target audience may be more satisfied with references and quick wins (even if they’re losses).
RELATED STORY: Why Does Everyone Hate the Minecraft Movie?
It’s fair to say that the cinema landscape has changed, with low-quality visuals akin to YouTube parodies a firm replacement. One user was kind and honest:
“This was in my opinion the worst movie I have ever seen. The storyline was straight awful, the made up items were weird (the tater tot gun was whatever though), they didn’t even wear any armor at the end or use any actual items other really than the sword, no enchanting, and so on.”
Despite there being several comparisons with the video game, it was pretty much berrated thanks to its quick-cash grab motif, distributed as a brand instead of tailoring it to a film-loving audience, as referenced by one cinema buff:
“The acting was terrible. The graphics were a bit disappointing, especially in the elytra flying scene. And overall I felt like SO much more could’ve been done with the storyline.”
Others commented on the theatre experience:
“I saw this movie tonight and the movie itself was whatever, but the theatre experience was horrible. Kids screaming, swearing, throwing whole bags of popcorn and cups at the people in front of them, it was awful. I think the movie would’ve been a fine watch geared towards children of course, but the experience made it unbearable. “
Another movie-goer took aim at the special effects, lamenting poor choices and studio effort:
“Just watched it and omg was it awful. The cgi was clippy and there were multiple scenes where it looks like they designed it on Microsoft studio and edited it straight in (the elytra crash w the water bucket? Did they even try on that??) not to mention there was several times throughout I thought I was seeing shit with the villagers totally changing, wasn’t til the final scene I realized its because they didn’t even animate the villagers in some parts, it’s literally just people standing around in villager costumes.
I’ve got a pretty low bar for enjoying movies, and I totally get it’s a kids movie, but damn did they butcher Minecraft.”
Some were straight to the point: “It’s lame how it goofs a lot. I really wish it was more mature”
On X, the commentary was more in-depth:
“The script, the score, the cinematography, the references, the theme, the emotional moments…everything was garbage from beginning to end. On my way to the hospital, definitely the worst movie I’ve ever seen.”
Game players found some value in the screenplay, even if it failed to redeem the experience they expected. They said it was:
“…truly one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen but the universal reaction to “chicken jockey” im seeing made it all worth it.”
