Review: The UK rapper’s debut mixtape is drill music’s one to beat

Chy Cartier is not one to be trifled with. Locking in a verbal style of controlled chaos, she has enhanced her profile, lamenting her foes, compelling them to follow the leader. This time, she lays down the gauntlet on a mixtape to send a message.

There’s a cinematic quality in the production efforts, charged in with an intensity that is a prerequisite for the drill genre, but Chyna is persistent.

The mixtape chalks an identity through aurally bold vocalisations that the emcee has solidified through a rhythmically engaging style. This feeds into the narrative she builds against a persona that deepens the musical traits she underlines in each performance.

The Verdict

Bullish, composed and ready, Cartier whips up a storm, leaving her adversaries to pick up the pieces. While there is an air of too much happening at once, it’s a great release to bump in your car. Something is missing, and perhaps it’s a curtailment in the song duration, where all tracks fall below the 3-minute mark. This is beefed up by Cartier’s tornado-style flow. It ultimately boils down to taste.

The 12-track release comes following a sensational run of form after the rapper slammed down single after single of sure-fire music. UK drill has a renaissance to compete with thanks to the North London lyricist. Ultimately, her decision to forfeit features showcases she can hold it down, and doesn’t need anyone to underline her natural talent.
