MRCY Reveal Visceral New Vibe ‘Wandering Attention’

Review of the British alt-soul artist’s latest track: an emotional fresh sound.

Incredible duo Kojo Degraft-Johnson and Barney Lister have finally revealed their latest song, Wandering Attention, taken from their upcoming album, Volume 2. The musicians document their upbringing through emotional vocals and vivid storytelling.

What Wandering Attention sounds Like

Featuring instrumentally rich snippets of a storied theme, the two salvage a noir-style, 1990s-inspired thematic pleasure rarely heard in the scene. The music video is comprised of washed out visuals and warm tones of cinematic colouration.

In a statement, the two said: “The song reflects on the hometowns we grew up in, touching on some of the more difficult aspects—both environmental and emotional. It explores the idea that, while those experiences are a part of who we are, they don’t wholly define us. We’ve grown and changed as individuals since then.”

Kojo, volumises into a retro style microphone over discontinued tapes and equipment. The other half, Barney, explained the intention behind the track, saying, “We’re trying to extinguish fear with optimism and worry with love.” The Huddersfield-born multi-instrumentalist continues to wave flash cards with messages, as his work (which includes drums and brass) bumps along to the vocals.

Our Verdict

This is yet another distinct track from the boys, as the two square up to immediately set straight their intent for their sophonmore album. It’s a masterstroke from the partnership and I can’t wait to hear what they have up their sleeve next.

Audibly, the production quality brushes strokes of a lush and waxed finish, going beyond the line of an ephemeral drop. Interestingly, it never slows and retains the same intensity, even as the chorus fades and the next verse begins.

Where to Stream

MRCY have made their fresh track available on all streaming platforms, including Bandcamp, where you can purchase the album in full. It’s released under their label, Dead Oceans Records.
