New Rosé Track ‘Messy’ Is Pointless, Generic Pop

New track from the Blackpink star is forgettable pop fluff.

If you’re going to do something, do it right or not at all. Rosé sold herself to fans with ease following an explosive debut song, APT. featuring Bruno Mars. And with that, it was smooth sailing from then on, right?

What Messy Sounds Like

Taken from the soundtrack for the upcoming movie starring Brad Pitt, F1, Messy is a ballad of sanitised production, with vocals that are of course fantastic, but delivered in such an ordinary way —it’s terrible.

Void of any textural nuance, it’s complimented only by a flat plateau of sonically easy ideas that play it safe. It’s a formulaic construct and as basic as they come.

Rosé manages to deliver something that’s melodically acceptable, but without a lick of originality. It’s standardised pop on steroids, factory produced straight from the battery farm of mediocre music.

The Verdict

Nothing is dragging me back to give it a second listen. There’s zero motivation to repeat it or second guess myself.

We’ve heard this all before, because it’s straight from the 2000s girl band playbook of obnoxious sounds, something permeating much of Rosé’s debut album.

She’s got all the talent in the world, but poor management and development. Hopefully, she will come out swinging for a comeback, but for now, move along, there’s nothing to see here.

How to Stream It

You can listen to Messy on all major music platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify via Atlantic Records. Alternatively, you can hear it on YouTube Music where you can also watch the music video.
