The new Masters of the Universe film is set to release in summer 2026
Last updated: 23rd January 2026
He-Man has been a staple of childhoods for decades. Now, the Saturday morning Mattel kids’ show is being reimagined with a fresh story, thanks to director Travis Knight.
From an animated series to action figures and now a live-action film, the brawny prince is a pop-culture legend, and this fresh revival aims to retell his story for a new generation—but just how will it be executed?
What Took So Long?
The production has notably been overshadowed by significant delays. It was initially slated for a 2021 release, however, this did not come to pass. Instead, the film experienced mayhem and has since been acquired by Amazon MGM Studios.

Since securing rights to the franchise, the production juggernaut has wasted no time, with principal photography beginning in London on the 6th January 2025.
The Cast of He-Man
Nicholas Galitzine is set to gear up as the iconic role of He-Man, while Idris Elba will play Man-At-Arms (Duncan), Camila Mendes will step into the shoes of Teela, and Morena Baccarin is set to become The Sorceress of Castle Grayskull.
Just when you thought Jared Leto was down for the count, his agent pulls a rabbit out of the hat: The Blade Runner 2049 star will play Skeletor (Keldor) while Alison Brie will develop the machinations of Evil Lyn.

Other members of the lineup include James Purefoy as King Randor, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena Glenn, Sam C. Wilson as Kronis/Trap Jaw, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, Sasheer Zamata as Suzie, and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Malcolm/Fisto.
The Plot
The plot appears to borrow from a Superman style narrative. Adam Glenn, the Prince of Eternia, crash-lands on Earth—his mother’s home planet—and, in the process, is separated from the Power Sword of Grayskull.
More than two decades pass before the protagonist is reunited with his blade, rediscovering who he is—He-Man. In true hero style, the legendary hero returns to his homeworld to battle the evil forces of Skeletor, and very likely, an epic showdown with the final boss.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: this isn’t how I remember He-Man, and you’re right. This is a wild departure from his origin story and edges into DC Comics territory. While many are excited for the film’s arrival, I’m sure we all have some reservations.
Fan Reaction
Surprise surprise, no one seems to like a certain person being cast. One user wrote: “I love so much of this casting, but Jared Leto was a f****** shit decision. I will not watch it simply because of him.” Another said: “Everything was going fine”—until he saw his name.
Others were cautious about the prospect of a movie: “I still can’t quite believe that this is going to be made, and I can’t imagine that it won’t be a disaster.”
Now, I get the frustration, but surely this is more reason to root for He-Man?
Production Details
In a statement, Amazon MGM’s Head of Film Production, Julie Rapaport, said: “Joining forces with director Travis Knight, Mattel, and Escape Artists, this reintroduction of the character and his universe will be an epic film that will delight audiences from here to Eternia.”
President of Mattel Films, Robbie Brenner, was equally excited about the production, adding: “We are thrilled to be producing alongside the highly respected and prolific Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch, with the visionary Travis Knight, and the charismatic and talented Nicholas Galitzine, our Prince Adam/He-Man!”
The film is directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee) and written by British screenwriter Chris Butler, who have worked together before. It is produced by Mattel Films, Amazon MGM, and Escape Artists.
Filming is took place in London, United Kingdom, with a budget of $200 million.
Final Thoughts
Judging by the production images, it looks to be a faithful adaptation. Nicholas Galitzine has undergone a major physical transformation to resemble the beloved 1980s character.
This points to a nostalgic production for big kids everywhere, while appealing to both new audiences. Just…please, don’t plaster our screens with too much CGI. Despite its shortcomings, the 1987 movie gave us some spectacular prosthetics.
Release Date
Masters of the Universe is set for a cinematic release on the 5th June 2026.
