‘Movie Night’: Aesop Rock’s Imagination Makes Banal Exciting

Empowering his everyday rap duties, hip-hop’s golden goose gets real

Aesop Rock releases fresh visuals for Movie Night, another weirdly attractive video from the rapper’s new album Black Hole Superette. Each product of his music is a sequel to the last and this time he turns normal into poetry.

The vocalist continues to dig into the everyday mundane — this time, it’s closer to home, delineating everything from food to vacuum cleaners to cats.

Surreal Sound: Movie Night Gets Weird

From walking the dog to drowning out reality, the lyricist continues his surreal experiment to a bold effect. Without getting caught up in the optics of pageant, he leans into atom sized inspiration, unzipping his thoughts into a hyper-real, penned experience.

“Shop-Vac always on, visitors have knocked for hours, It’s fingers in the ears and singing ABC for adults.”

While the track is titled Movie Night, it’s not necessarily so black and white. The song highlights the notion of the everyday banal having a colourful property — from cheeses to honey to shoes, he tackles virtually everything.

The production exhibits an intentional light-heartedness and typifies the musical design Bavitz is accustomed to.

The Verdict

This is classic Aesop and another demonstration of true artistry. Not being limited to the confines of one genre, his brushstrokes are inspired by everything around him.
