The Welsh rapper continues to drop music with consistency. This time, he turns his pen on conformists
Chrxn’s latest track, Dic Sion Dafydd, is a phrase of derisive description directed at Welsh people who embrace Anglophilia. It’s a track that underlines the draining of a nation that has, for years, been at the behest of its neighbours.
This fresh find sees Welsh rapper Chrxn tell the story of British subterfuge within the country of Wales, and how the crown’s efforts bled the nation’s riches dry. It’s lyrically pungent, led by gorging drums and a funky track. His form of expression, tempered by the artist’s style of dispatch, articulately captures the raw essence of betrayal and colonialism. But the production, supplied by Kaspuh creates further clarity.
The Music Video Is a Time Capsule of Wales
The video is a visual collage that exhibits a lens of atmospheric sonder across the country’s landscape. From Coney Beach to high street frames, the pleasantries and poignancy of a nation starved by empire is on full show.
The rapper released a statement, where he further explains his new single:
“When a person belonging to a linguistic or ethnic minority looks up to the majority and wish to conform to it to the point of forgetting about his/her own identity/language and even denying it, he/she tends to be considered by his/her people as a traitor. In Wales, this kind of person has a nickname: ‘Dic Siôn Dafydd’”
Platformed by music fitting of its political retrograde, Chrxn portrays its decline with both heart and longing. However, the rapper offers a glimpse of hope through his lyricism. Its style, one of surveillance and a damning tone, is both bold and spirited, not to mention a much-needed quivering commentary.
It’s lyrically pungent, and is led by gorging drums and a funky track. His form of expression, tempered by the artist’s style of dispatch, thematically captures the raw essence of betrayal and colonialism. But the production, supplied by Kaspuh creates further clarity and it’s winding bass and snares help the song lift even further. This is a dope track, but also, one of importance.
