New album, fresh video: Tears is banal pop music
Sabrina Carpenter’s return has been nothing short of controversial. But that depends on who you ask. With all the gossip and hyperbole surrounding this album, the first single since its release brings an interesting video with subpar music.
Review and Verdict
The pop-artist revealed her album cover to raised eyebrows. In it, she’s bending down onto the floor on all fours with her hair being pulled by an out of frame, faceless male — sounds like moral panic more than something to whine about?
Tears is an uptempo track which Carpenter says is: “a real party for heartbreak, a celebration of disappointment! It’s laughing at yourself and your poor choices as everything is falling apart.”
I’ll translate: she’s explaining the synopsis for 90% of all pop music — conventional to say the least. It’s shopping in the grocery-store music, lilted with a spark cut from the same cloth for A&R safety.
“It’s wondering how loyalty and love always gets you back to third wheeling, spoken sarcastically like a true 25-year-old.” Yes, quite Sabrina.
Whoever wrote Tears, please pat yourself on the back for me. You’ve nailed it for a pop vocalist for the millionth time.
