The New York duo unleash incredible music with an unrelenting disposition
Who on earth said hip-hop fell off? It’s still kickinglike a poltergeist, pushing things off shelves, haunting “rappers”, whipping them with the mic to a degree of poisoning mystique.
So, what did we discover? Another haunted house. Ill, cold, and knocking rappers off with deftly finesse. Jamil Honesty & JR Swiftz swing an exclusive mace of rap on their new album, MEMOIRS, a quintessential listen.
Review and Verdict
These two are pristine out of the box. While there’s no head bopping here, we’re instead shaking our heads from side to side with excitement, thanks to the indisputable thrashing our ears get.
Charting a course of fiery rhythms, Jamil dispatches ideas with the utmost distinction. There’s an unpolished feel to this EP: as heard on Follow Me, 4EvaNyce, and 94 Nas (T.C.T.E.).
Without looking at who features, we clock the unmistakable voice of Jay Royale, who sets fire to everything he touches and gets away with it. The same can be said for our hosts, Jamil and JR, who just haven’t missed on this project.
It’s an obligation to listen to MEMOIRS; it’s not an elective choice and it deserves to be blasted on repeat. It’s instinctive; hip-hop aficionados get an injection of boom-bap rap filtered through a production experience few will understand.
This completely overshadowed our plans to review and publish the work of others. That’s the effect artists have when they hone their skills — they get our attention. It’s consuming. If you must procrastinate, do it to this.
