Young university student, Trey Reed, was found hanging from a tree on campus
On Monday, at approximately 07:05am, the body of a young man Demartravion Reed (known to friends as Trey) was found hanging from a tree on Delta State University (DSU) property. His body was found in the middle of the campus.
University President Daniel J. Ennis addressed a press conference, noting most campus activities have been canceled:
“Our community is deeply saddened by this loss and we extend our heartfelt condolences to families and friends and all those who were impacted by Trey’s loss,” … “I’ve spoken to Trey’s family and expressed our heartbreak.”

“As of this time, there’s no evidence of foul play,” … “While there’s no evidence of foul play, the body has been retrieved by the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office.”
Public Shock
Despite the police report, many on social media find it hard to accept Trey’s death was an accident. “Black people do not lynch themselves,” one said, while another user exclaimed: “If you truly believe violence is wrong then do not be silent right now. Silence means you’re complicit. Trey Reed was murdered.”
Peeler later stated that DSU is “a safe campus.”
The investigation is ongoing.
