From R&B to hip-hop and jazz, we lay down the best in music this week
Some of the best music has gone under the radar, or perhaps your sound profile is tuned into another station? Whatever the reason, we chart the best in class releases from the past week.
Tendai – “Explain”
Out of this world, Tendai’s incredible voice has a piercing, long-lasting effect on his audience. This time around, the London-born singer embraces acoustic guitar, a choice that augments his exquisite vocals — a classic in the making.
Styles P – “Dour”
Two minutes of straight fire action serve us another patch from the lyric casting Lox member. Once again, Style P propagates a tense formation of wonder bars over slick, deep protruding piano keys. Only he knows how to pull it off. Minimalist, and without percussion — I’m hoping for a new long play.
Joy Crookes – “Somebody To You“
Joy Crookes is a vocal marvel. Embracing a variety of styles and executions, she can adapt to a myriad of material, and Somebody To You is no different.
Filled with a triumphant mix of instrumental usage, the song’s arrangement fluidly echoes alongside Crooke’s voice, an impactful, effortless delivery.
La Reezy – “Hardhead”
La Reezy continues to blow us away with his unique style ident. Conveying memories in an uplifting and inviting way, the young New Orleans rapper relates his experiences growing up and what he’s learnt.
Dave East – “Havana“
Are we ready for his 26 track album? I think so. Riding a HighHonors beat to perfection, Dave East drops a slick visualiser to accompany his latest soundcheck for his forthcoming project. It’s time he got the respect he deserves, and this latest joint explains why.
Joel Ortiz – “The Yaowa”
Joel Ortiz dropped a stunning work of music — a composition that comprehensively braised the game’s yearnings for a rap album. The Yaowa is its lead single, and this track is a statement of intent from the experienced aficionado.
