UK Makes Full Recognition of Palestine In Official Statement

Keir Starmer announces United Kingdom’s recognition of a Palestinian state

Following decades of displacement and occupation, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced the British Government’s has formally recognised the State of Palestine. The move was also followed by Canada and Australia.

The UK Govenment has formally announced its reocgnition of a Palestine state.

The move comes as Israel continues to bombard the Gaza Strip following two years of conflict in what the United Nations (UN) now says is a genocide.

Death Toll, Famine, and Displacement

Estimates put the death toll at 65,000 with some figures much higher. Almost all of Gaza’s two million population (90%) have now been displaced. Just under half of the enclaves population (47%) are aged under 18 years of age.

In a statement, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy Said:

Hamas is not the Palestinian people. A Palestinian state is a just cause, and our country, 108 years ago, signed up to the Balfour Declaration, we believe in a homeland for the Jewish people, but we also stated that we believed in the civil and religious rights of the Palestinian people, and now is the time to stand up for that two states.

A YouGov poll found that Britons support the move by 44% to 18%.

Official Statement

In an official statement, the UK government said:

“The UK has formally recognised Palestine to protect the viability of a two-state solution and create a path towards lasting peace for the Israeli and Palestinian people.

The historic decision, announced alongside Canada and Australia, comes as the situation on the ground in Gaza continues to worsen, Israel continues to expand its illegal settlements in the West Bank, and Hamas continues to hold the hostages.”
