Producer Madlib provides balance on a massive new track — Daddy’s Girl
Madlib‘s magic fingers are back with a sweet melody of tones built upon by the swinging bars of Rapsody. From the outset, it bats with a pressing punchline: “Beethoven was Black, truth is a key,” laying down a challenge for her contemporaries to top something she will later call out herself.
A Journey In Song And Legacy
The song tracks themes of identity and heritage over a stripped-back piano laced with a tight and loaded toned-down delivery, though beefed up through the rapper’s wordplay and intention.
It’s a deep dive — a counter to the uphill struggles she’s experienced, and calls out the dilution of rap via ghost writing which is becoming the new normal:
“Been fighting my way through for this culture we call hip-hop
What y’all mean y’all don’t like this?
I really think you n***** is jealous ’cause y’all ain’t write sh*t
I know all of your writers, haha, b****”
Overall, this is a sensational, quietly controlling production; one that offers purists of the game something to chew on, as well as sub-genre–loving heads without a divisional argument to be had. Although, I’m sure the internet will find one.
