Sumud Flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces in the Mediterranean Sea
Israel has been accused of mistreating prisoners taken from the Gaza bound Sumud Flotilla. The ship was captured in the Mediterranean Sea. Among those present was renowned activist Greta Thunberg.
Fellow Turkish activist ErsinÇelik who was also onboard said:
“They dragged little Greta by her hair before our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They did everything imaginable to her, as a warning to others,”
Journalist Lorenzo D’Agostino corroborate this. He said they, “wrapped [her] in the Israeli flag and paraded like a trophy”.
Swedish Embassy Statement
Following her release, the Swedish Foreign Ministry released a statement detailing a brief overview of her treatment:
“Another detainee reportedly told another embassy that they had seen her [Thunberg] being forced to hold flags while pictures were taken. She wondered whether images of her had been distributed,”
“She informed of dehydration. She has received insufficient amounts of both water and food. She also stated that she had developed rashes which she suspects were caused by bedbugs. She spoke of harsh treatment and said she had been sitting for long periods on hard surfaces.”
Breach of Geneva Convention
One of Israel’s national security advisors Itamar Ben-Gvir appeared on television taunting the crew. He openly compared them to “terrorists” as they were filmed on touring a detention facility, a potential breach of international law under the Geneva Convention.
