Defence Secretary John Healey announced the move following days of Labour’s denial
The British Government has announced it has deployed troops to Israel to monitor a “fragile” ceasefire. The move comes after recent comments from US officials about a plan to “disarm” Hamas.
Western officials have made no secret they see it as a real estate opportunity, including US President Donald Trump, who has openly called Gaza the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Ceasefire monitoring
Defence Secretary John Healey unveiled the plans barely a week on from Yvette Cooper’s assertion that no such move would happen.
The US government also revealed they have deployed 200 troops to Israel, though we’re told they will not enter Gaza.
In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said: “A small number of UK planning officers have embedded in the US-led CMCC, Civil Military Coordination Centre, including a 2* deputy commander to ensure that the UK remains integrated into the US-led planning efforts for Gaza post-conflict stability. The UK continues to work with international partners to support the Gaza ceasefire to see where the UK can best contribute to the peace process.”
Many have called it a “gambling move” while others have said Western movement is “irresponsible” given their involvement in the conflict. Britain and the US have continued to spy and supply arms to the Israeli government.
One appointment that has raised eyebrows has been the instalment of Tony Blair as overseer for the rebuilding of the region.
