Gremlins has been a staple of childhoods — despite its violent initiation — and it continues to be a cult sensation. Fans will be pleased that a third instalment is in the works. Here’s what you need to know.

Gizmo Is Back!?

You can bet your house that Gizmo will be back. As the mascot of the series, leaving him out would be a betrayal of the fans. A Gremlins film without the lovable Mogwai creature is like Pokémon without Pickachu.

The second movie went big, with some larger than life characters — from mutant spiders to an intellectual debater. And, of course, don’t forget Greta and Christopher Lee took up some screen time.

The Director

While no cast has been announced yet, a director has been confirmed. Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter) is set to helm the production.

Having co-produced the first two films, he replaces Joe Dante, whose work on the first two instalments set the tone. From its humble alleyway beginnings, to freak science experiments, his vision defined the franchise.

While Columbus knows its source material well, it’s not understood why Dante was overlooked.

Merchandising Opportunity

It has all the makings of a merchandise cash grab — likely the real motive its resurrection. Let’s face it, it’s been 25-years since the “Gremlins 2: The New Batch”. Expect an army of plush toys, action figures, video games, and more.

The Cast and Plot

Either negotiations with Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates are already underway, or the studio is planning a full cast overhaul. The safer bet is a return of the original leads, paired with a second-generation storyline. The franchise wouldn’t feel complete without them.

My guess, is that the plot will revolve around Gizmo being fed after midnight.

Release Date

Gremlins 3 is expected to be released in 2027.
