Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to return in the Mummy 4
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly set to return in a fourth installment of The Mummy franchise.
Credible reports suggest the project is in development, but it has not been officially confirmed as ‘in production’.
This Is What You Need to Know
Brendan Fraser recently made a comeback having clinched the Academy Award for best actor in The Whale. The new Mummy film will see him return as Rick O’Connell and Weisz back as Evelyn Carnahan-O’Connell.
The 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise was both a commercial and critical flop, leaving Universal Pictures scratching their heads. However, their answer is here, with the original slayers ready to return.
According to reports, the film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli‑Olpin & Tyler Gillett, the duo behind 2023’s Scream reboot, and Ready or Not (2019).
Writer David Coggeshall (The Family Plan) will take the lead for the screenplay.
The Truth and Verdict
While the rumours are strong, nothing has been set in stone. No crew has been hired and a script is yet to be written. Brendan Fraser’s comeback signals momentum for the actor and could give him a nudge to work alongside Rachel Weisz.
However, the most concerning aspect is the original director’s participation: he’s not involved. Stephen Sommers crafted a fun and engaging movie ride in The Mummy 1 & 2, ultimately skipping Tomb of the Dragon Emperor—for a reason: it wasn’t good.
If the franchise is to finish on a high, Universal would do well to bring back Sommers and his writing team.
Rachel Weisz declined to be involved in a third film, citing the lack of a compelling script. The director, who was also the writer, passed on the opportunity as well.
