New music from Blue Note saxophonist Dave McMurray sees him blend Afrobeat with upbeat jazz
Dave McMurray releases his fresh new single, The Jungaleers, taken from his upcoming album I LOVE LIFE even when I’m hurting. The album focuses on the city of Detroit and his deep admiration for his hometown.
Review and Verdict
The Jungaleers is a reference to the mascot of his Detroit high school and shifts between an Afrobeat production while the saxophonist traces his signature across the track.

Its main ingredient comes courtesy of drummer Jeff Canady, with support from percussionist Mahindi Masai. Also collaborating on the song is Blue Note Records president Don Was, whose bass provides a silky shot of boomy sound.
It’s a colourful release showcasing the strength of everyone involved, with a warm vibrato woven throughout that helps keep the collaboration cohesive. Although the overtones can feel slightly disjointed and in need of a variation, despite the high point of skill displayed by each musician.
