Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi returns to music with his new single, “The Day That I Die“
Lewis Capaldi returns to music following the release of his new EP and single. “The Day That I Die” is a poignant letter to close friends and family with the song echoing these notions in both song and sentiment.
The singer-songwriter has been on hiatus while he withdrew from antidepressant medication (sertraline), which can have a severe effect on the mental state of its user. The singer says he found the time difficult to navigate day-to-day life, something many others have noted during periods of coming off the drug.
Review and Verdict
The Day That I Die is a song inspired by the trials he experienced following this interval, saying it’s “a f——ing note from a really dark time”, and called it a note to his parents, siblings, and friends.
“On the day that I leave, I hope the memories find you happy / And my dad ain’t too mad at me, to say the least / Pray my sister gets to sleep / I wish I could have said it better, what all those times we had together meant to me.”
Capaldi’s music often resonates with people who share the same experiences, and this time is no exception, as evidenced by the hordes of comments online.
With a brooding, melancholic atmosphere, the song is preceded by piano before thunderously transitioning into a burst of guitar riffs and the singer’s own powerful vocals. The track is taken from his new EP “Survive“.
