What We Know About the First New Zelda Movie Set Photos

Wes Ball unveiled the first set of photos for the new The Legend of Zelda film — costume choices hint at what to expect

Director Wes Ball (known for The Maze Runner Trilogy and Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes) has revealed the first set of images for The Legend of Zelda movie.

The internet has gone into full meltdown following the unveiling of the set photos.

Not a lot is known about the film, however, now we have our first look at production stills, there’s more to unpack.

Costumes, Cast, and Crew Choices

Aside from the leads, the director’s casting choices have been kept under wraps, with few details disclosed.

In the images, Zelda (played by Bo Bragason) is wearing a blue tunic, and is carrying a bow and arrow. Link (portrayed by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) however, is wearing the iconic green tunic the hero of time is known for. This hints at the possibility for the story to be somewhat similar to Breath of the Wild, though at this point, there are no guarantees.

There are also rumours that Dichen Lachman is on set and will play Impa.

Production began today in New Zealand, following in the footsteps of fantasy trilogy The Lord of The Rings, a choice that will no doubt resonate with fans of the franchise.

While his all but guaranteed cinematographer pick, Gyula Pados, works well on camera, it’s unclear whether it Nintendo and Sony’s choices will pay off. Fan expectations vary wildly, though the consensus leans toward a BOTW and LOTR style. However, right now, we can only look to Ball’s past work to speculate what filming could potentially be like.

The latest stills are reminiscent of scenes from The Breath of The Wild.

One thing that will excite Zeldonians (yes, we just made that up) is that costume designer Michele Clapton (Game of Thrones, The Crown) is on call.

The Ganon Question

It’s unsure who will play Ganon, and the fact filming has begun with little disclosed means both Sony and Nintendo are holding this one close to the chest. I don’t blame them, the pressure to pull this off must be immense.

Release Date

The Legend of Zelda is slated for an exclusive 7th May 2027 cinematic release date.
