Kirk Jones’ film about John Davidson — who lives with Tourette’s Syndrome — is an enchanting, humanising watch
While cinephiles juice themselves up over mainstream movies, director Kirk Jones’ latest could just possibly be film of the year. As an underdog, its strengths lie in both an outsider’s understanding of the story’s nuances, but also relatability in its screenplay.
‘I Swear’: A Heartwarming, Gut-Wrenching Yet Funny Plot
The film is based on the true story of John Davidson, a Scottish resident who lives with Tourette’s syndrome.
Portrayed by Robert Aramayo, we follow his life in 1980s Galashiels as he faces uncertainty and strife from a less than accommodating public.
His motor tics which include coprolalia (involuntary swearing) see him rejected at home and bullied at school. As he grows up, we witness him forge friendships that come to help John accept himself.
