UK rapper and producer duo Sonnyjim and Morriarchi release new album ‘Golden Parachute’
Sonnyjim rarely misses, if at all. The rapper’s flurry of singles teasing his new album Golden Parachute featured a meld of alternative sounds crafted by producer Morriarchi. It’s pungent, with a sillage to turn heads for those with refined palates.
Review: A Luxury Tirade of Purist Rap
Both the rapper and producer are one of few hip-hop artists who can take their skill set on a globetrotting rhyme fest. Having worked with spitters from the United States to India, their ability to forge solemn partnerships has made heads take note. On Golden Parachute, this trend continues.
Following their drops The Real Thing featuring Tay Jordan and Jay Worthy, and New Jersey Drive with Fly Anakin, the duo continue to kick flames up the street.
A roster of artists flame the meat to smouldering heights, like on Fast Life featuring Beni Laylo, a drum-less canvas driven by lyrically dense ejections of hard passages with sonic variety. Like on Scotch and Escovitch and Rosie Perez, SJ’s persistent style perseveres over slow-burn compositions etched by Morriarchi’s thick atmosphere.
But it’s the producer’s sonic presentation that underlines the album’s concept. At its core, it’s about landing softly with a grin on your face, something alluded to in the project’s title and in a statement released by the two.
Inspired by Prince’s song of the same name, SJ and MA are in a class of their own, unbothered by the rushed, self-destructive nature of the music industry that surrounds them. They configure their own pace through a luxury understanding of their art with a smirk to complement it.
Golden Parachute is a brick-and-mortar experience, with varying degrees of production lounging with relaxed, multisyllabic works.
The Verdict
Overall, it’s a satisfyingly dope drop, with a straightforward catch of skilled lyricism and bold, gritty loops, appealing to a cross-section of rap aficionados. While its smoky elements signal incoming fire, it may not be for all — but hip-hop fans will feast.
