‘Bellingham’: Headie One’s Simplistic Style Is Mired By Formulaic Flows

Headie One shoots but misses by a mile on new track “Bellingham”, underlining a derivative state in the UK scene

Headie One drops his new single “Bellingham“, with a music video shot in Madrid, mirroring the tone of the track’s influential footballer protagonist. There’s a lot of hype surrounding it, but little weight to measure. Our reaction is one of bewilderment for an artist with the resources and time at his disposal.

Review and Verdict

While Headie One‘s return can be celebrated, there are also reasons to hold off on the confetti. Once again, we hear a vocal delivery fastened to a formulaic and familiar sound. It’s the same ubiquitous, humdrum UK flow; again, we’re offered what feels like trend-chasing and a lack of contrast, prompting one to ceremoniously roll one’s eyes.

“This brown one thick, she melanin (Uh)
Me and her eat, it’s Michelin (Uh)”

There’s so much talent in the UK scene, but when it’s masked by such dull, pervasive phonics, it becomes harder to discover talent beneath the radar range of a commercial scene. Jude Bellingham is a great footballer, but the comparisons here fall short by a wide margin. Lyrically, the track is in need of much refinement; however, the production from M1OnTheBeat is an astutely crafted and steadfast effort.
