UK Rapper SM Brings Authentic Vibes In A World of Trends

He’s ready to take on the world of rap, but before he does, SM (Stackmore) talks to Stanisland Magazine about his aspirations and his music

Having dropped his latest single ‘Minute‘, UK rapper Stackmore, also known as SM, is ready to show the world his sound. Based in London, Stanisland Magazine caught up with the microphone wizard to talk music and more.

What’s the story behind your artist name?

“The name came from me just being in my area & being around some of the older guys on my block. Obviously being involved in certain activities ‘Stackmore’ was something that’s was said a lot in reference to money & it just stuck with me hence the name ‘SM’. I see myself as a motivated character so use my name as a way of life, meaning to always strive for more.”

How and why did you start rapping?

“I started rapping for fun when I was in primary school, around my area with my friends. The reception I got from my people when I showed them what I had written gave me a great feeling like no other. But I officially took music serious 3 years ago.”

Who were your initial collaborators?

“Other than people I was rapping for fun with, the first person I collaborated with seriously was J7 (Rapper/Producer). That was a cool experience because we grew up in the same area, but I hadn’t seen him for years and I was already looking for a producer to work with. I didn’t know he produced or rapped, so when I found out it just made sense to lock in.”

How has your local area influenced your sound? Has it changed since you first began?

“At some point, my local area was an influence, but I like hearing different sounds to help my creative process, so it’s only natural that my sound would change over time. I think what’s made my music more effective is my ability to be more vulnerable when I’m writing in the studio or just in my room.”

What’s one thing you hope won’t be around in a year?

“I wouldn’t necessarily change anything in particular because music is art; I don’t think there should be a guide book on how to should create, but if I had to say something, it would probably just less of the trend hopping and more authenticity.”

What’s the best feedback you’ve ever been given?

“Be yourself unapologetically and don’t allow anyone or anything to trick you out of your journey to success. Also ‘trust the process’.”

“Minute” is about your trials and difficulties — was there a single incident that prompted you to record it?

“It’s really just a general reflection on some of the things I’ve been through in life and not just me, but anyone just trying to stay focused on their goals and aspirations.”

Do you have an album or EP in the works?

“For sure! I enjoy the process of going back and listening to songs I’ve made and picking the best ones to release for a single. I’m looking forward to doing the same for an EP or album. I’m still trying to get a feel for what my listeners appreciate, but once I am somewhat certain it’ll be here sooner than you think.”

What’s next for SM?

“More music, for sure an EP, quality and structure.”
